Paxil [Seroxat] - Greatest Number of Reported Suicide Attempts - New Study Suggests

A new study published on the Public Library of Science [PLOS] Website has found that Paxil [UK name, Seroxat] comes out on top with the greatest number of suicide attempts.

The very large study looked at all adverse event reports [AER's] due to prescription drugs from the from the FDA website, submitted between 2004 to 2008.

They identified 832 drugs that accounted for 1,404,470 or 99.9% of the adverse reports . Prescription drugs only.

When they looked at suicide attempts paroxetine [Seroxat, Paxil] was identified as having the greatest number of reported suicide attempts (1,323) reported out of 27,012 AERs (4.9%).

So a whopping 5% of the AER's for Paxil were actual suicide attempts or completed suicides.

According to GSK - Paxil is supposed to be a drug that prevents suicide not an inducer of suicide. This study shows that either GSK are lying or they need to be educated.

They conclude that the randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are usually small numbers of people and actual attempted and/or completed suicides may not occur – but suicidal ideation may be reported.

What they have shown here scientifically is that suicidal ideations that appear in the RCTs equate to increased actual attempts or completions in the in the post market phase.

The post-market phase is often referred to Phase 5 of the clinical trials – ie; the population at large is the study group.

Paroxetine comes out at the very top of all of the 832 drugs studied, for suicide attempts and completions.

No doubt here that Paxil [Seroxat] should be a cause for concern – so why is it still on the market, why is it still being backed by health regulators?

The article can be downloaded from the Plos website.
