Glaxo - Merchants of Venice... or Ulverston?

Never one to shy out of making a buck or two, GlaxoSmithKline have recently sold part of a canal it owns to Ulverston Canal Company (UCC).

The stretch of water has been owned by GSK for 35 years and a spokesperson for GSK said:

“As part of an internal business review, ownership of the canal is not a key element of a successful future antibiotics manufacturing site at Ulverston. However, GSK is committed to ensuring the canal remains a valuable community amenity in the future and therefore believes its divesture in this way is the best way of achieving this."

Interesting to note then that GSK’s chemical plant in Ulverston is one of the most carcinogenic polluters in the UK and in September 1992 the Ulverston site (then owned by Glaxo Wellcome) dumped several toxic chemicals in the river Leven, without authorisation. The chemicals included trichloroethylene, chloroform, and chlorobenzene. [1]

Also, in May 1994, the Ulverstone site discharged, again without authorisation, 1,350m3 of “ineffectively treated effluent” into M. The company was required by law to notify the authorities within 24 hours, but they didn’t until six days later. [2]
